Quick Tips and Helpful Hints For MAC Users
> When in list view you can jump to a particular file or folder by typing the first one or two letters of it's name. If more than one file starts with the letter(s) you can use the tab key to alphabetically jump to the next file. This works in just about any version of the Mac OS you are likely to be running, including OS X, and it will also work in Icon View. If you would rather not use the keyboard to navigate and you have particular items that you would always like to be at the top of the list, put a blank space before the name. Also, If you are using OS 9 (or before) you can have the item be at the bottom of the list by putting a tilde (~) before the name.
> Do you find yourself having too many finder windows open at once? Do you find it tedious clicking on one close button after another to close them all? If so, here are some simple solutions. Option-clicking on a window's close button will automatically close all the desktop windows. You could also use the keyboard combination Option-Command-W to accomplish the same result. To avoid creating the desktop clutter in the first place, hold down the Option Key when opening a folder to automatically close the enclosing folder. These shortcuts will work in OS X, OS 9 and earlier versions of the OS.
>Here's an under-utilized, but handy trick that has been around in the Mac OS for a very long tiime and fortunately it's made it's way into OS X. By Command-clicking on a Window's title bar and you'll get a pop-up menu that shows the hierarchial path to the root level of the drive that the folder is on. Not only is this great way to quickly see where a folder resides on your computer, it's also great way to quickly navigate UP the folder hierarchy. If you want to quickly navigate DOWN the folder hierarchy then you'll want to be in column view in OS X or use one of the many shareware utilities that provide this function.
>Those who are running Mac OS 9.x have undoubtedly noticed the folder icons that appear in windows' title bars. Some of you may not realize that these icons aren't merely decorative; in many ways, they operate like traditional folders. You can move these folders to the Desktop, to the Trash, or to another window by clicking the folder icon and then dragging it. You can also create an alias of the folder by pressing the Command and Option keys while dragging the icon to a new location. And as you might expect, duplicating the folder is as easy as holding down the Option key while clicking and dragging.
