Quick Tips and Helpful Hints For PC Users Who Use Outlook Express
> To add an email address to the list of blocked senders in Outlook Express do the following: Highlight a message from the person you want to block. Click on Message | Block Sender... from the menu at the top of your screen. Click Yes to have all existing messages from the blocked sender deleted from the current folder. Future messages are blocked even if you answer No to the question and keep existing messages. Outlook Express automatically adds the sender's address to the list of blocked senders.
> Whenever you reply to somebody via email, Outlook Express can add the recipients to your address book automatically. What a sweet way to build a comprehensive list of contacts! Do the following: Select Tools | Options... from the menu in Outlook Express. Go to the Send tab. Make sure that Automatically put people I reply to in my Address Book is checked. Click OK.
> To print your Outlook Express address book: Select Tools | Address Book... from the menu in Outlook Express. Make sure the addresses are sorted in the desired way. To change the sort order, select View | Sort By from the menu and select the order that fits you best. Highlight the contacts you want to print. To highlight multiple (individual) contacts, hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on them. To highlight a block of contacts: Click on the first contact in the block. Hold down the Shift key while clicking on the last contact in the block. The two selection methods can be combined. If you want to print all address book entries, no selection is necessary. Click the Print button in the toolbar. Click Options to select the paper size and orientation appropriate for your (physical) address book. Under Print Style, select the desired layout. Memo outputs all the information about the contacts. Business Card prints names, company names, email addresses and phone numbers. Phone List creates a list of phone numbers (home, business, mobile, fax and others) for the contacts. Click Print.
> To prevent Outlook Express from controlling your access to email attachments: Select Tools | Options... from the menu in Outlook Express. Go to the Security tab. Make sure Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus is not checked. Click OK.

N2 The Net's Product Showcase For The Month Of March
N2 The Net would like to announce the addition of a new product. Online Data Storage and Backup will soon be available for both residential and commercial users. More and more computer users are looking at the need to store date offsite. With high speed Internet, online storage is a reliable and economic option. Backups can be automated and encrypted before being transferred offsite. Once needed, they can easily be download from offsite and used.
The system can be used for backing up a whole operating system or maybe just a company's accounting information. No need to run to the bank to store a tape, everything is done through your Internet connection.
Pricing is expected to start as low at $10/month and be based on the amount of data stored. If you would like to receive more information about this product, please contact Randy Robbins at rrobbins@n2thenet.com.
What The Heck Is That And What Does It Do?
We are sure that at some time or another you have heard plenty of technical terms used to describe the various parts of computer. We also understand that not everyone who owns a computer is as "nerdy" as we are here at N2 The Net! So, for the "cooler" crowd, here is a "hip" list of the most popular computer parts and what they do.
CPU - Abbreviation of central processing unit, and pronounced as separate letters. The CPU is the brains of the computer. Sometimes referred to simply as the processor or central processor, the CPU is where most calculations take place. In terms of computing power, the CPU is the most important element of a computer system. One of the most popular processors on the market today is the Intel Pentium 4.
RAM - Pronounced ramm, acronym for random access memory, a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes. RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and other devices, such as printers.
Hard Drive - The mechanism that reads and writes data on a hard disk. Hard disk drives (HDDs) for PCs generally have seek times of about 12 milliseconds or less. Many disk drives improve their performance through a technique called caching.
Modem - Short for modulator-demodulator. A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines. Computer information is stored digitally, whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form of analog waves. A modem converts between these two forms.
CD-R Drive - Short for Compact Disk-Recordable drive, a type of disk drive that can create CD-ROMs and audio CDs. This allows users to "master" a CD-ROM or audio CD for publishing. Until recently, CD-R drives were quite expensive, but prices have dropped dramatically. |
Quick Tips and Helpful Hints For MAC Users
> Reading PDFs becomes infinitely easier in Preview if you select "Continuous Scrolling": then you don't move from page to page, but read an infinitely long "scroll" which allows you to zoom in as much as you desire.
> Do you find yourself having too many finder windows open at once? Do you find it tedious clicking on one close button after another to close them all? If so, here are some simple solutions. Option-clicking on a window's close button will automatically close all the desktop windows. You could also use the keyboard combination Option-Command-W to accomplish the same result. To avoid creating the desktop clutter in the first place, hold down the Option Key when opening a folder to automatically close the enclosing folder. These shortcuts will work in OS X, OS 9 and earlier versions of the OS.
> Microsoft Word tries to make your work easier by formatting certain types of text for you automatically, but sometimes, its help is intrusive. To hold many of Word's auto-formatting horses, choose the AutoCorrect command in the Tools menu. In the AutoFormat and AutoFormat As You Type tabs, uncheck the Ordinals with Superscript, Symbol Characters with Symbols, and Internet Paths with Hyperlinks checkboxes. To keep bulleted and numbered lists from appearing automatically, turn off these options as well. If you're likewise tired of Word 98 automatically inserting a capital I at the beginning of the word iMac when iMac is the first word of a sentence, turn off the Capitalize First Letter of Sentences option in the AutoCorrect tab.
> If you've failed to turn off the Warn Me If Computer Was Shut Down Improperly option in the General Controls control panel, and the repair window appears every time you restart your Mac after it crashes, you can get out of this repair window by pressing the Escape key on your Mac's keyboard. Because it's hard to tell exactly when pressing this key will do the most good, try pressing it repeatedly when the repair window first appears.
