Quick Tips And Helpful Hints For PC Users

> If you are used to older Windows versions such as 95/98/ME then when you first install Windows XP the start menu may look a bit strange. Thankfully you can change this back to the "classic view" very easily. First right-click on the Start button, then click on Properties from the menu that appears. Now you will see a box appear. Click on the Start Menu tab. Now simply select the Classic Start Menu option and then click Ok. Now the start menu will look more familiar to those users of previous versions of windows.

> We have been asked on several occasions for instructions on how to back up your address book in outlook express  This is a good thing to do in case your system becomes corrupt and you lose all of your addresses. It is also a quick and easy way of moving your addresses to another computer. Backing up your address book is very easy to do in Outlook express. First, open your Outlook Express as you normally would. Next, click on File and then move your mouse to Export and then click on Address Book. The best format to use to export your address book is the Text File (comma separated values). Choose this option and click the Export button. Next enter the path to which you want to save the book.
You can save the book anywhere you want, but you must name the file with the suffix .csv For example you can call the file something like "addressbook.csv".
When you have typed the name of the file and where you want it to be saved, click the Next button. You will now be asked which fields you want to export. Put a dot or checkmark in the box next to the fields you want to save then click  Finish. You should now see a box that says "Address book export process has completed".

> Now that you have learned how to save your Outlook Express address book, here are instructions on how to import it into Outlook Express if you need to. This is a very easy process. Open Outlook Express as normal. Click on File, move your mouse to Import and then click on Other Address Book. Now you will be asked what type of address book you want to import   Choose Text File (comma separated values) from the list and click Import. You will be asked for the location of your address book. Now click Browse and go to where you saved your book in the previous tip. Click on your backup file, then click Next.  Now choose the fields you want to import by dotting or checking them and then click Finished.

BEFORE COMPUTERS...

An application was for employment

A program was a TV show

A cursor used profanity

A keyboard was a piano!

Memory was something that you lost with age

A CD was a bank account

If you had a 3 1/2 inch floppy you hoped nobody found out!

Compress was something you did to garbage not something you did to a file

If you unzipped anything in public you'd be in jail for awhile!

Log on was adding wood to a fire

Hard drive was a long trip on the road

A mouse pad was where a mouse lived

A backup happened to your commode!

Cut - you did this with a pocket knife

Paste - you did this with glue

A web was a spider's home and a virus was the flu!

I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper and the memory in my head.

I hear nobody's been killed in a computer crash but when it happens they sure wish they were dead!

N2 The Net's Summer Cleaning Special - Act Now Before Time Runs Out!

You heard it right! N2 The Net is offering a summer time computer cleaning special! From now until September 1st you can bring your computer into our office at 251 S.Willow Ave. in Cookeville and receive a total computer maintenance package for only $50.00!

What do I get in this maintenance package?

One of our technicians will give your computer a total maintenance check up along with providing certain programs to keep your computer in tip top shape for a while to come. The specific programs you will receive are the newest updated versions of Adaware SE Personal Edition, Spybot: Search and Destroy, AVG: Anti-Virus, and Pop-Up Stopper. All of these programs are free for their entire use. You will NOT have to worry about the hassle of re-subscribing or having limited features because they are NOT free trials- they are just FREE! We will install and run each of these programs on your computer and clean anything they find whether it be spyware or viruses. Your N2 The Net email address will be added to our Pristine Mail program that both scans your email for viruses and eliminates a majority of your SPAM mail. We will download all critical windows updates, and add a folder to your favorites list of helpful and entertaining websites we think everyone would benefit from. We will also include a backup CD of the programs we installed on your computer along with a complete set of detailed instructions on how to update these programs for the future maintenance of your computer system.

Why does my computer need this maintenance?

The main reason is that these programs we install will eliminate all viruses and spyware on your system. If left on your computer, viruses and spyware could result in your computer operating slower, it developing a "mind of its own" so that you are limited in doing regular activities such as going to certain websites without receiving unwanted pop-up ads or error messages, they could eventually cause information loss of your valuable family photos or school documents for example, and they could even leave you more susceptible to certain methods of identity theft by tracking the websites you visit and recording your personal information such as credit card numbers and passwords.

How will this maintenance package improve my computer's performance?

This maintenance should result in your computer starting up faster and running faster in general. All known current security loop holes made by Windows will be closed. Your computer will be free of all viruses and spyware and equipped with the proper programs and handy instructions needed to prevent further infections. You will also see a decrease in SPAM and junk email you receive due to being included in our Pristine Mail program.

As a special offer we are also allowing a "Refer-A-Friend" option for the Summer Special. If you bring in more than one computer for the special whether it is your computer or someone else’s then the fee will only be $40 per computer system instead of the normal $50.

Mac User's Tips For The Month Of July

>
Experiment freely. It's darn hard to break your Mac by choosing something from a menu. So when you get a new program, or are trying something new (after you read the fine manual, of course), be sure to poke around a bit. Hold down the Option, Command, and/or Control keys and click on stuff. Try all the menus. Hold down those keys while you try menu items. Click or double-click all the little icons in all the toolbars or palettes. Every so often you'll discover something really worthwhile this way.

> Get enough RAM. How much you may ask? At least 256Mb of RAM to run Mac OS X. and that’s a bare minimum. To run more than a handful of programs simultaneously without degraded performance get at least 512Mb. If you have less than 256Mb consider getting more.

> Buy what you need to do the job.You wouldn't try to drive a nail into a wall with a wrench, so don't try to create a newsletter using a 7 year-old copy of MacDraw running in Classic mode. You'll save time and effort in the long run if you buy the right tool to do the job right. If AppleWorks came with your Mac, it’s the appropriate tool for hundreds of different projects.

> Back up your hard disk.
There are only two kinds of Mac users: Those who have lost data and those who are going to. Or, those who back up, and those who are going to wish they had backed up.

A Poem For The Fourth Of July

Here in the harbor, made famous by her very existence, Stands a lady, polished by a new American pride... And her name is Liberty. She holds a torch ignited by the flame of love, And from her raised hand and her gentle eyes She offers a blessing of reassurance with silent lips: "Give me your weary, your dreamless, your hopeless, Those who have lost faith in themselves and our country. Send these, the embittered, to me. I am living proof of what a nation of people can do, When they believe, when they commit, when they join hearts. I lift my torch beside the door that remains open, A golden opportunity for all who enter, When the hope is peace And the reason is freedom for all."

-- Judith A. Lindberg
