Tips For Preventing Spam

What Exactly Is Spam?

We've all received them—unwanted emails containing unsolicited advertisements, chain letters, offers too good to be true, or worse. Collectively these messages are known as spam mail, and they clutter your inbox, wasting your time and your computer's memory. Many people find they receive more spam than legitimate mail. And most of us have at one time or another deleted some important email while manually removing spam messages. Increasingly, dealing with this problem has become more than a mere annoyance—it's become a productivity issue. And recent surveys indicate it's rapidly getting worse with spam comprising an ever larger percentage of overall mail received.

How Do I Prevent Spam?

Use rules and filters to screen unwanted mail - Your N2 The Net email account allows you to do this. Please call our tech support team for simple instructions on how to get setup.

Avoid the “unsubscribe” feature included in spam messages. Most spam includes instructions on how to "remove yourself from the list.” More often than not, these removal instructions do not work. Instead, when you click on the link to unsubscribe you are verifying that you have a valid e-mail address and spammers will then permanently add you to their list or sell your address to others.

Do not reply to the spam message. This also lets spammers know they have found a valid e-mail address

Consider where you share your personal information online. Spammers harvest e-mail addresses from Web pages and news groups. Any address posted to a Web page or used in online forums will almost certainly be used by spammers.

Be wary of filling in address, phone number or e-mail information on non-secure sites. Some users create “junk” e-mail accounts with a free service to use on Web forms so their real e-mail address doesn’t receive large amounts of spam.

Don’t forward unknown email. Sometimes spam will have a fake "To" or "From" field. Since it appears that the e-mail was erroneously sent to you, the spammer hopes you’ll read it and helpfully forward it along. Don't.

Don’t give out your e-mail address unless you know how it will be used.

Never buy anything advertised in spam. Even if you happen to be looking for a lower mortgage rate, don’t look for it in junk e-mail. Chances are the services advertised are bogus anyway. Respected loan companies don’t randomly flood inboxes.

Tips For Preventing And Cleaning Spyware

What Exactly Is Spyware?

Spyware is a general term for a program that secretly monitors your actions. While they are sometimes sinister, like a remote control program used by a hacker, software companies have been known to use spyware to gather data about customers.  This is also known as "adware". It is a hidden software program that transmits user information via the Internet to advertisers in exchange for free downloaded software. Usually coming in the form of ‘cookies' - these enable the cookie writer to build-up information about what you do and where you go on the Web. As such, spyware is cause for public concern about privacy on the Internet.

Signs That Your Computer May Have Spyware:

Your phone bill includes expensive calls to 900 numbers that you never made—probably at an outrageous per-minute rate.

You enter a search term in Internet Explorer's address bar and press Enter to start the search. Instead of your usual search site, an unfamiliar site handles the search.

A new item appears in your Favorites list without your putting it there. No matter how many times you delete it, the item always reappears later.

Your system runs noticeably slower than it did before. If you're a Windows 2000/XP user, launching the Task Manager and clicking the Processes tab reveals that an unfamiliar process is using nearly 100 percent of available CPU cycles.

A search toolbar or other browser toolbar appears even though you didn't request or install it. Your attempts to remove it fail, or it comes back after removal.

You get pop-up advertisements when your browser is not running or when your system is not even connected to the Internet, or you get pop-up ads that address you by name.

When you start your browser, the home page has changed to something undesirable. You change it back manually, but before long you find that it has changed back again.

How To Prevent Spyware

Do not open Spam Email - Web sites advertised in unsolicited e-mail can try to plant dialers or other types of pests on your computer.

Be careful what you download Read all dialogue boxes carefully and close anything that looks suspicious. When closing dialogue boxes or pop-up advertisements, be sure to use the proper "X" to close the window. The Web is full of ads that feature mock "Xs" or "Close" or "OK" buttons within the ad.

Block Pop-Up Ads - install software that will block pop-up ads and prevent them from appearing in the first place.

Be sure to download and install all of your Windows Critical Updates.

Tips For Preventing and Removing Viruses

What Exactly Is A Virus?

A computer virus is an executable file designed to replicate itself while avoiding detection. A virus may disguise itself as a legitimate program. Viruses are often rewritten and adjusted so that they will not be detected. Anti-virus programs must be updated continuously to look for new and modified viruses. Viruses are the number one method of computer vandalism.

How To Prevent Viruses

If you get an email with an attachment from someone you don't know, delete it.
If you get an email with an attachment from a friend, don't assume it's harmless! Many viruses spread by automatically sending themselves to the addresses found in the victim's address book, and they often include something in the message body that looks like a personal message from your friend.
Unless you are very computer savvy, and you can tell for sure from the name of the attached file that it's not a virus, then CALL or EMAIL your friend and ask if they meant to send you an attachment
Install anti-virus software. There is a great, FREE anti-virus program available for you called AVG 7.0 from Grisoft. Click Here to download it today.
Update your anti-virus software frequently. An anti-virus program is only as good as the frequency with which it is updated. New viruses, worms, and Trojan horses are born daily, and variations of them can slip by software that is not current. Most anti-virus software is easy to update online with options to do so automatically.
Get immediate protection. Configure your anti-virus software to boot automatically on start-up and run at all times.
Avoid downloading files you can't be sure are safe. This includes freeware, screensavers, games, and any other executable program - any files with an ".exe" or ".com" extension such as "coolgame.exe."

Be sure to download and install all of your Windows Critical Updates.

What To Do If Your Computer Becomes Infected By A Virus

First, do not panic if your computer seems to have a virus. Common software problems, such as program execution errors and corrupted files, can create symptoms that appear to be virus-related. The easiest way both to find out if your problem is indeed a virus, and also to remove viruses on your computer system, is to obtain an antivirus program and scan your system.

If your virus scanner does find a virus, most scanners will give you an option to choose what to do with the virus. The first thing to try to do is heal or fix the infected file. If this option doesn't work, you can quarentine the file so that it does not spread.

If for any reason you are unable to remove a virus from your system, please call our tech suuport team at 1-888-605-9322 so that we may help. We have plenty of options for you to choose from to remove the virus from your system.
